George Best is widely acknowlrdged to have been one of the greatest football players of all time, remembered for his halcyon days with Manchester United FC. He played for the Northern Ireland team, but there failure to reach the final rounds of the world cup denied him the ultimate global stage. He was named European Footballer of the Year and Football Writers Association Player of the Year in 1968. He had a rare combination of pace, balance, two-footedness, goal scoring prowess and the ineffable ability to run through entire defences. Indeed, Pele, the Brazilian who was often said to be the greatest player of all time, called Best "the greatest footballer in the world".
