Born Harry Webb on 14th October in India. His family moved to the UK in 1948 when Indian independence made their lives difficult. His first public performance was in 1954 and he first sang in public in a Christmas play in 1955. His first true singing debut was as a member of The Quintones in a school fundraiser on Bastille Day 1956. Cliff's next band was The Drifters (later to become The Shadows in 1959) a band he would be involved with for over 10 years. His movie debut came in 1959 and several movies followed over the years with his last in 1974. In 1976 Cliff became the first western rock artist to tour in Communist Russia. In 1995 he received a full knighthood and became the first pop star to do so. Cliff Richard has had over 100 chart hits and over 55 top ten hits in the UK.
